Fiji Islands Backpacker Guide

Mamanuca Islands Group

The Mamanuca Island group consists of 20 islands dotting the West Coast of Viti Levu. They can be seen from Nadi and on sunny days, so can their surrounding reefs. These islands comprise the traveller's dream with small palm tree filled islands surrounded by fine, white sandy beaches and turquoise blue waters. These islands are easily accessible from Nadi and its main area of industry is tourism. With its low land mass, the weather here is sunnier than Nadi and ideal for the backpacker looking for some solid periods of sun. Beachcomber Island and Mana Island are by far the most popular islands amongst backpackers and offers a fun, array of activities and organized group events. The surfing in the area is considered to be some of the best in the world with breaks such as Cloudbreak (accessible to the public only on Saturdays unless you pay for accommodation on Tavarua Resort) and Wilk's Passage, both accessible by boat. Other activities on the Mamanuca's include diving, island hopping, organized yacht tours, snorkelling, kayaking, windsurfing and fishing.

Regular and affordable vessel transfers (including complementary transfers from most Nadi hotels and hostels) operate out of Port Denarau Marina. Getting to these islands is typically arranged from Nadi at your chosen accommodation. The islands offer many day tripping options for those who chose not to stay on the islands.
